Automatic Spring Loaded Fishing Reel for Survival Kit |
The Yo Yo automatic fishing reels are made of galvanized steel with a tempered spring that automatically sets the hook when the trigger is released by a fish taking the bait.
Very popular for catching Crappie and Catfish. Yet you can catch bass, trout, perch, sunfish, bluegill, steelhead, even turtles and other fish when present. Wonderful on backpacking trips, we do dayhikes while the yoyo catches dinner.
They can be attached to limbs, boat docks, the side of a boat, or any other means that will suspend the reel a couple of inches above the water.
Also is an excellent device for Ice Fishing.
The stainless steel coiled spring retracts the preloaded 60 pound test line when the bait is taken.
Dimensions: 2-1/2" X 3/8
Weight: 1.8 ounces (about 50 grams)
Comes preloaded with about 15 feet of strong 60 lb test nylon line. Just add leader line, appropriate hook, weight, bait and go. Spring loaded reel permits about 8-9 feet of nylon line to be pulled, attach another 6-12 feet of appropriate leader which gives you and effective distance of up to 20 feet from shore.
To set it , attach to a limb or sturdy point by the shore or on a dock. Pull out the line. As you pull, the stainless-steel spring will coil tighter and tighter. When you've pulled out the desired amount of line to fish the water depth you want, engage the small wire trigger on the side of the reel. The trigger holds the reel in place, and the spring inside the reel is coiled tightly.
Another effective setup is to attach the reel to a branch above a deep, bankside pool. Bait your hook with a live minnow and pull the cord down just far enough to reach into the water an inch or two. The live bait will swim and make ripples on the surface. Predatory fish will attack the wounded looking minnow with a vengance .
When a fish takes the bait, it trips the trigger, causing the spring to uncoil quickly, which sets the hook and keeps tension on the line. As the fish swims away the stainless-steel spring fights the fish pulling it back to the reel.
Can also be used to fish from buoys, docks, or other structures over water.
Advantages over an unattended line:
* Set the hook firmly with a quick jerk
* Keeps constant pressure on the hook, preventing the fish from escaping
* Keeps the line from getting tangled in underwater logs and limbs by pulling the fish up and away from the bottom each time it runs
* Play the fish as it runs from the reel and then pulls the fish back to the reel
* Pull the to the edge - near the surface - the activity lets you know you have a fish on the line, day or night and keeps the fish fresh and alive until you retrieve it.
Buy several, they are cheap enough that you can have a fleet of them to set a trap line at your favorite fishing spot.
Other uses around camp include:
* Ultralight Clothes Line
* Set trip line permitter alarms with Bells
* Suspend small items above picnic table (Keep bottle opener handy)
IMPORTANT Always check and abide by local fishing regulations before using this product. For example: California laws ban possession of such a device while fishing - so California residents should keep this in the SURVIVAL KIT only. Other states limit the number of traps ore demand that owners clearly tag them with their Name and Address. Please check your state laws before using for everyday fishing. In a life or death survival situation, go ahead and use 'em.
