It has 5, Count 'em - Five LEDs for Maximum Brightness. Plus they are strategically placed and aimed for optimum lighting based on the task at hand.

One Super Bright 40,000 MCD LED is sandwiched in the brim and aimed straight ahead for night time trail walking. Excellent illumination out to 20-30 feet with reflective illumination beyond that.

Two More bright white LEDs are hidden underneath the brim using patent pending C.U.B. (Concealed Under Brim) Technology. These aim the light directly in front of you to a range of 18 to 36 inches and beyond. That range is in the 'task sweet spot' - ideal for reading, setting up a tent in dark, working on an engine, whatever you have to do in dim or dark conditions.

Plus Two More bright GREEN LEDs are hidden underneath the brim using patent pending C.U.B. (Concealed Under Brim) Technology. The 2 GREEN LEDS provide light at night while preserving your night vision (pupils don't constrict when exposed to green wavelengths). You don't suffer temporary night blindness when they are turned off. We have also noticed that animals are less sensitive to the green wavelengths, and are less likely to be spooked when you use the Green LEDs.

We especially noticed the difference during a night time snowshoe trip in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California. With GREEN on we could see further ahead and when turned off we could immediately enjoy the moonlight nightscape. Green really works for night illumination.

Technical Tip: We wanted to hack in an 'extra mode' in the lighting cycle defined above. We wanted to add White Brim LED only This mode is good for trailwalking and also preserves your batteries on long trips. Here is the secret trick: - Simply open the battery pack located in the sweatband. Remove the Front 2 CR 2032 coin batteries, leaving a pair in the rear chamber. Close the battery pack. Click the button a few times and ONLY the Front Brim mounted LED will function for night Trail walking. Save the other batteries and install them as necessary. You can accomplish the same thing by putting a coin sized paper between the front batteries (isolating them from the circuit).

Always store batteries apart from each other so they don't short out.

Caps can be carefully and lightly hand washed. Remove the batteries and then use mild mix of fabric detergent and water. Use a soft brush to work mix into the fabric to remove dirt or stains. You will see the wires in the sweatband and the switch - go easy on those areas. Give it a mild rinse and pat dry with a terry cloth towel. Let air dry. Never put in machine washer or dryer.
