Venturing outdoors ? Into Rattlesnake country? Threat of simple Bee stings keeping you inside? Consider this kit cheap insurance - be prepared.
The first few minutes are the most important for venom removal. After 15 minutes you will have gotten out as much as you can.
After you are bitten by a rattlesnake and have used the kit - what next ? From our readings most experts recommend that you hike out when you're only a couple of hours from help. Most severe reactions to bites do not occur until several hours post bite. Write a note (waterproof paper) requesting help and pin it to your shirt. Include your identity, relatives phone number, and details of your situation - snakebite, type of snake, date and time of incident. If you are found unconscious or delerious, this will permit your rescuers to respond appropriately.Take it easy, and stay calm when you are hiking out. You want to keep your circulatory system as quiet as possible, preventing a rapid spread of venom. As soon as you have access to a vehicle (your own, by hitchhiking or 911) Get to the nearest hospital for antivenin treatment.
If you are way off the beaten path the better strategy might be to use the kit for extraction, then setup shelter at the nearest trail intersection. Get some firewood and water and hunker down. Write a 2 notes (waterproof paper) requesting help as listed above, secure one prominently on the trail, and pin the other to your shirt. Get still, keep the bite site about the same level as your heart, and wait for someone to come get you .
Snakebites in the U.S. rarely cause human fatalities. You may be lucky - one out of every five bites by venomous snakes does not introduce venom.
Rapid onset of pain and swelling are indicators that you have been injected with venom.
