How to use a survival signaling mirror:
Grasp the mirror by its edges. Clean the mirror surface if needed.
Face the sun and use the mirror to reflect sunlight onto your other hand or a nearby tree.
Raise the rear side of the mirror up about 1 inch from your eye. Look through the screened aiming hole and relocate the reflected sunlight on your hand or nearby tree. You should see a flare located in the screen of the aiming hole. Sometimes this is referred to as a fireball.
By angling the mirror you should be able to bring the fireball to your target. If you are unsure, reset by aiming at your hand.
By tilting the mirror and adjusting the angle you should be able to use the mesh to aim the flare/fireball at a target. Any little movements of your hand will cause the target to see a flashing of bright light.
Even if you can't see your target. It is worthwhile to flash distant areas that would likely contain rescuers - ridgelines, fireroads. Flash a spot for at least 60 seconds so that a rescuer will not disregard your signal as random. If possible flashes in sets of 3 are the universal sign of distress.
If you are hunkered down due to the heat of the day or to conserve water, use the lanyard to hang the mirror on an exposed branch. Even a slight breeze will move it and cause passive flashing that may signal a rescuer - it works for you while you conserve your energy.
There is no substitute for practice. Take this mirror on your next hike and practice with your friends.
