It compacts down to 8", and extends to a full 36". It weighs about 55 grams. The rod has Five Fiberglass Telescoping Sections and 4 line eyelets.
The integrated case/handle is available in colors - RED, BLUE, SILVER and GOLD. Click Play to See the Movie Don't let the small size fool you. This is a capable rod with plenty of action. We get reports of 4 lb+ fish on this rod. It makes a great gift for a fisherman.
The end rod segment bends to 90 degrees. The bottom 3 segments are stiffer, with about 10 degrees of flex. This is a lightweight rod, forced 'hand' bending beyond these limits can cause breakage that is not covered under warranty. The only breakage we've experienced has been during lab testing - where we intentionally go beyond the limits. No fish has broken one yet, but what a story that would make.
The Fly Reel is basic, with no drag setting, but functional
This combination is by FAR our lightest - combined rod/reel - weight is 113 grams. Special base clip to attach to the pen rod. Reels do not come with fishing line. Information for fly fishermen : The small size imposes some limitations, the 36" length of the rod does not give you the whipping action of a longer conventional fly rod, your arm will get a workout. With some practice, and a proper setup, casts can be made to 30 feet. Setup: Not much monofilament backing line is required since the reel is small. We used about 10 yards of 4lb test in a small diameter line (like Spiderwire or Berkley Nanofil sold in sidebar) tied to the reel with a nail knot and hand reeled on. The small rod eyelets require the use of very light fly line (thin). We worked with Cortland Line Company to package a specialized lightweight fly line for this setup (see sidebar). Use a nail knt to tie the fly line to the backing monofilament. Keep knots tight to fit through the eyelets. Leaders should also be light - for example 5x (3.5 lb test - sold in sidebar) or even 7x (2lb test) Experiment with a leader of 4 feet or 6 feet, and tie the leader knot outside of the tip eyelet, prior to casting. Drag ican be regulated by thumb friction on the reel, there is no internal drag setting on this reel.
