You may wonder - how can a pen fishing rod be any good ? In the right hands, they are an excellent ultralight fishing tool. We love it for hikes and backpack trips because it is small, light, and easy to use in remote locations and in dense brush environments. If you understand how to set the drag, play a fish, and use it properly, they are a great pocket sized tool for backcountry fishing.
Note: These are NOT FOR KIDS. Children are notorious for rough handling and most kids today have not been exposed to telescopic antennas and tend to jam them closed, rather than close the sections from the bottom.
Called the "World's Smallest Fishing Pole" - It weighs only 55 grams (about the same as 9 quarters), and is pocket sized. It extends to 36 inches and has 4 eyelets for line.
It compacts down to 8", and extends to a full 36". It weighs about 55 grams. The rod has Five Fiberglass Telescoping Sections and 4 line eyelets.
The integrated case/handle is available in colors - RED, GOLD, SILVER and BLUE.
Don't let the small size fool you. This is a capable rod with plenty of action. We get reports of 4 lb+ fish on this rod. It makes a great gift for a fisherman.

The end rod segment bends to 90 degrees. The bottom 3 segments are stiffer, with about 10 degrees of flex. This is a lightweight rod, forced 'hand' bending beyond these limits can cause breakage that is not covered under warranty. The only breakage we've experienced has been during lab testing - where we intentionally go beyond the limits. No fish has broken one yet, but what a story that would make.
The Spin Casting Reel is high quality and is very serviceable for easy backcountry repairs and line detangling. Combined with the pen rod, this is the setup we take on most of our hikes. We are able to get consistent, accurate casts to 50 - 75 feet. To cast you open the wire “bail” that wraps line around the spool, holding the line with your index finger. Release the line as you flick the rod forward and with a little practice you’re casting like an expert!
These are best for small stream or lakeshore fishing with spinners, spoons, or bait and bobbers.
Change to left or right hand retrieve in minutes, adjustable drag, release, and lock. Retrieves are smooth with 3 ball bearing action. These spinning reels have a 5.1:1 gear ratio for smooth fast retrieves. These are made with a specially sized base for use with the pen rod.
Reels do not come loaded with fishing line. It is recommended that you load them with 2 to 6lb. test line. We like Spiderwire EZ or Berkley Nanofil.

Want to try fly fishing with a Spin Casting Reel ? Get a clear plastic float bobber (Torpedo Float or Bungee Bubble brand). Tie a 7x or 8x fly leader with a dry fly to one side of the float and your regular 2 - 4lb fishing line to the other. The float will give you the weight you need to cast the fly 50-75' across a stream or pond. The 7x or 8x leader gives the fly a good presentation. Backcountry fish ignore the bobber in favor of that 'delicious' fly !
