Small in size but big on features - the FRX2 Emergency Radio is Solar Powered, Battery Powered, and Hand Crank (wind up) Powered. It can charge its internal battery from a mini USB port.
Eton hand crank turbine generator technology uses advanced materials to achieve maximum power efficiency. Eton hand turbines are constructed from aircraft grade aluminum and are durable and lightweight. The are geared to provide an ergonomic enhanced user experience. The dynamo consists of severa wound magnets at its perimeter, when spun they generate a current that charges the battery. This dynamo system is geared in such a way that a few revolutions of the handle generate serveral revolutions at the output producing maximum usable current.
Eton solar technology uses the latest, most efficient monocrystal solar cells on the market. The solar panels are extremely efficient, even in low light or cloudy conditions and have a longer lifetime that past cells.
It has AM, FM, and all 7 NOAA Weather Radio bands in this portable form factor. It uses an analog tuner so you can make fine adjustments to tuning in fringe areas.
It also functions as a high power LED Flashlight with 3 super bright LEDs. Use it as a becon to signal for help or to find your way at night.
Cell Phone/GPS Charger - integrated into one unit. Connect your device via the mini USB port and hand crank to charge. It willl also "dump charge" from its fully charged internal battery to your device mini USB.

When solar charging the radio, place it into direct sunlight (not through a window, screen, in artificial light or in shade) for 8 to 10 hours to get a full charge, after which it should play for about 4 to 5 hours, at low volume.
Crank charging it for 90 seconds will allow it to play for 15 to 20 minutes, at low volume. If you crank for a longer period, it will play longer.
If it loses power such that the radio no longer plays, the light may still shine for a couple of hours because it draws far less current than the radio.
Smart phones, iPhones, Motorola Droids and GPS units can be power hogs. 10-15 minutes of cranking will result in 1 - 3 minutes of talk / use time, so plan your calls and usage accordingly. It makes you appreciate the power of the modern electrical grid when you have to put your muscle energy into creating electric power.
Note that some cell phones permit disabling features like Bluetooth, WiFi , and lowering screen backlight. Those techniques can help with extending battery life - consult your manual for details.
Tip: Prepaid, simple cell phones with basic texting features can run longer on a charge and may be an approriate choice for a trail phone. They are lighter, run longer on less power, and less of a disaster if you misplace it on the trail.
